Simple Ways to Care for Your Energy
Easy, everyday practices from many traditions to help you feel more settled, steady and at home in yourself.
Have you noticed that some days you feel bright and open, and other days you feel drained before breakfast? We all have days like these. Many of the world’s oldest traditions have something gentle to say about them.
We are all energy
Across cultures and centuries, people have described a life force moving through us. In India it is called prana. In China it is qi. In Japan it is ki. Yoga, qigong, tai chi, meditation and Reiki all grew from this way of seeing a person.
In these traditions, we are more than a physical body. We are a whole being of body, feelings, mind and spirit. When life brings stress, loss or simply too much to do, the teachings say our energy can feel tangled or low. The practices are meant to help it settle and flow again.
I want to be clear about what this is. These are traditional and spiritual teachings. Life energy has not been measured by science, and researchers are still exploring how these practices affect us. I offer them as ways of caring for yourself that many people find calming and grounding.
You can begin at home
One thing I love about these practices is how simple they are. You don’t need special equipment or a lot of time. A few minutes, done often, can become a kind and steady habit.
Some teachers have made this especially easy to learn. Donna Eden, an American teacher of energy medicine, is known for short daily routines of gentle movement and tapping that anyone can try.
Here are a few gentle places to start.
- Quiet breathing. Sit still and follow your breath in and out. Even two minutes can help you feel calmer.
- Visualization. Picture soft light, or a color you love, moving slowly through your body. Many people find this soothing.
- Mindful movement. Yoga, tai chi and qigong pair slow movement with steady breath. Choose what suits your body and go at your own pace.
- Time in nature. A slow walk under trees, or a few minutes with your feet on the grass, can feel wonderfully grounding.
Listening to yourself
Caring for your energy is really about paying attention. How do you feel when you wake up? Which people, places and habits leave you feeling lighter? Which leave you tired? There is no need to judge the answers. Simply notice.
Over time, you’ll start to know what you need. Perhaps it is more rest. Perhaps it is more movement, more time with friends, or more time alone. This kind of listening is a quiet act of self-love.
A small practice for today
Try this gentle three-minute routine in the morning, or any time you feel scattered.
Stand or sit with your feet flat on the floor. Take a slow breath in through your nose and let it out through your mouth with a soft sigh. Do this three times.
Next, rub your hands together until they feel warm. With an open palm, sweep slowly down your left arm from shoulder to fingertips, three times. Then do the same on your right arm. Imagine you are brushing away whatever you no longer need to carry today.
Finally, rest both hands on your heart. Picture a warm golden light there, growing a little brighter with each breath. Say to yourself, “I have what I need for today.”
Notice how you feel. You can return to this whenever you like.
Gentle care, alongside good care
These practices are complementary to medical and psychological care and are not a substitute for it. Please keep seeing your doctor, and check with them before starting any new kind of movement if you have health concerns. Think of these practices as a kind daily habit, like a warm cup of tea, that supports how you feel.
